TOLEDO, Ohio - The Michigan State men's golf team opened its five-event fall schedule at the Inverness Intercollegiate Sept. 11-12. The Spartans finished 11th in a field of 15, with junior Ryan Brehm recording the best score for the Spartans tied for ninth place individually. Five of the teams which finished ahead of Michigan State placed in the top 20 at the 2006 NCAA Championship.
Taking first in the 15-team field was Southern California, with a team score of 303-299-294--896. Michigan State turned in a three-round total of 319-306-304--929 at the 7,225-yard, par-71 Inverness Club, for an 11th-place finish.
"The scores were high here across the board, and these are some of the best teams in the country," MSU head coach Mark Hankins said. "This was a very fast course and I don't think we were ready for the pace of the greens. It was good for our team to get out and start competing."
In a tournament where the top score was a 1-over par 214, Brehm led Michigan State with a 12-over 225 (80-69-76). Brehm's best round was in the second half of Monday's competition, scoring a 69 in the second round. Manuel Villegas of Florida was the only golfer to post a lower score than Brehm in the final day of competition, carding a 68 in the final round.
Matt Harmon turned in the second-best total for MSU, placing tied at 29th at 79-77-75---231. Also competing for Spartans were Randy Hutchison (T43th, 78-81-75--234), Steve Cuzzort (T66th, 87-79-78--244) and Jack Newman (74th, 82-81-86--249).
Michigan State resumes play at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by Minnesota, at the 7,020-yard, par 72 Spring Hill Golf Club Sept. 16-17.
