STILLWATER, Okla. - Siera Strawser had a goal and an assist in the first half to help lift the Oklahoma State women's soccer team past Michigan State, 2-0, in the opening game of the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge in front of 712 fans at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex on Friday night.
Oklahoma State (3-0), ranked 14th in SoccerBuzz.com's Central Region poll, took 14 shots in the first half, allowing Michigan State (1-2) to counter just five times. Jesyca Rosholt delivered first, firing a shot off a deflection from a shot of Strawser's into the net in the 26th minute. Strawser stuck with her own goal two minutes later after a cross from Niccole Grimaldi.
That was the extent of the scoring, as both defenses hunkered down in the second half, allowing a total of five shots, with State taking two.
Junior goalkeeper Nicole Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) stopped four shots in the loss, while Jeanne Rankin stopped three shots for the shutout for the Cowgirls.
Both teams played physically, as Michigan State drew 16 Cowgirl fouls and Oklahoma State drew 20 Spartan fouls.
Michigan State will wrap up the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge with a 1 p.m. game with Oklahoma on Sunday.
