
Three Spartan Golfers Qualify For 106th U.S. Amateur

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State will send three golfers to the 106th U.S. Amateur, as senior Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.), sophomore Randy Hutchison (Traverse City, Mich.), and junior Nathan Gunthorpe (Ovid, Mich.) qualified and will compete at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., on Aug. 21-27, 2006.
Harmon won his sectional qualifier with a 36-hole score of 139 at Muskegon Country Club on July 31. This summer, Harmon has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 81st U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, and to the quarterfinals of the 106th North and South Amateur Championship.
Hutchison also won his sectional qualifier, carding a two-round score of 138 at the Country Club of Boyne - Heather Course in Harbor Springs, Mich., on July 27. Last season, Hutchison posted two top-20 finishes in eight events, and carried a 75.64 scoring average for the Spartans.
Gunthorpe grabbed the final qualifying spot in his sectional qualifier at Western Golf & Country Club in Redford, Mich., posting a 36-hole score of 139 on July 25. As a sophomore, Gunthorpe competed in seven events and finished with a 75.48 scoring average.
The par-72, 7,237-yard Hazeltine National Golf Club hosted the 1970 and 1991 U.S. Open, the 2002 PGA Championship, and is scheduled to host the 2016 Ryder Cup. The Match Play field will be determined by 36 holes of Stroke Play, held at Hazeltine National Golf Club and the Chaska Town Course on Aug. 21-22. The first round of Match Play begins on Aug. 23, while the 36-hole final will be held on Aug. 27.
