WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue pinch hitter John Cummins delivered a sharp single to left field with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Boilermakers a 4-3 victory over Michigan State Sunday afternoon. The Boilermakers (17-9, 5-3 Big Ten) won three out of four games during the weekend series.
Michigan State (14-13, 4-4 Big Ten) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but came back with three runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Reaching on an error, E.J. Daws scored on a double to right center by Ryan Basham. Two batters later, Alan Cattrysse launched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field.
The Boilermakers tied the ballgame in the fifth, scoring two runs on a single, a triple and a double.
Purdue's Spencer Ingaldson led off the seventh with a double as the Boilermakers threatened to retake the lead, but the Spartans went to their bullpen and retired the side with no damage. Spencer Hahn, A.J. Dunn and Mike Monterey all saw action for MSU in the combined pitching effort.
The Spartan defense again came through in the eighth inning. Purdue's Jeff Mojzik produced a leadoff single and advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. With Ingaldson at bat, the Boilermakers attempted a suicide squeeze, but Monterey raced off the pitchers mound, fielded the ball and gunned down the batter at first to escape the inning.
The Spartans had a runner in scoring position with one out in the top of the ninth, but a pair of strikeouts ended the rally.
Purdue's Chris Toneguzzi (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the win in relief. Monterey (3-4) suffered the loss, allowing one run on three hits in 1.2 innings.
The Boilermakers stranded 14 base runners after out-hitting the Spartans, 12-6. Oliver Wolcott accounted for two of MSU's six hits, going 2-for-4.
Michigan State returns to action Wednesday, April 12 for a non-conference game against Western Michigan at 5:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich. The Spartans resume Big Ten play April 14-16 for a four-game series at Penn State.
