HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Michigan State women's track and field team closed out the regular season at the Hillsdale Relays, on Saturday, April 29, with a strong team showing. Senior Michelle Rafferty led the way, posting a regional qualifying performance in the 5,000 meters. Rafferty's time of 16:47.29 earned her a sixth-place finish and set the tone for the Spartans who would go on to post 11 top-10 performances, including a win in the 100-meter hurdles by sophomore Jackie Walton (14.06).
Rafferty's mid-distance teammates Aimee Keenan, Lisa Senakiewhich placed eighth and 10th, respectively, in the 1,500 meters. Senakiewhich posted a time of 4:36.62, while Keenan crossed the line seconds later at 4:39.34.
In the 800 meters, seniors, and sisters, Megan and Shannon Radermacher posted a pair of top-20 finishes for the Green and White. Megan Radermacher narrowly missed qualifying for regional competition, posting a time of 2:12.67 to finish in third place overall. Meanwhile, Shannon Radermacher turned in a 2:17.84 to finish in 16th-place.
Junior Marquita Allen garnered an eighth-place finish in the 200 meters, posting a 25.68. Allen would add a 10th-place performance in the 400 meters (57.45), finishing just behind teammate Paris Mandy. Mandy's time of 57.15 was good enough for a seventh-place overall finish.
Allen, Mandy and Walton were joined on the 4x100 meter relay team by sophomore Etienne Chaplin and posted a time of 47.32 to earn a second-place finish.
Fresh off of a first-place finish in the long jump on day one, senior Taren James capped an impressive meet with a first-place performance in the triple jump. James leapt 39-8 3/4 to easily outdistance second-place finisher, Tomea Peebles of Central Michigan, by over eight inches.
Junior Melinda Buckmaster's javelin throw of 131-2 was her best of the season and earned the Mayville, Mich., native a third-place finish in the event.
With the regular season now behind them, the Spartans will have two weeks to prepare for the post season. Michigan State will play host to the 2006 Big Ten Championships, at the Ralph Young Track and Field, on May 12-14.
