HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Michigan State men's track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the Hillsdale Relays, late Friday evening. The Spartans were led by a strong effort from their middle-distance corps, including sophomores Stephan Shay and Dustin Voss. Shay turned in a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters (14:07.25), while Voss placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:06.72), for the Green and White.
Shay was joined in the 5,000-meter top-10 by teammates Matt Bartlebaugh and Nick Oertel. Bartlebaugh's time of 14:26.88 was good enough for an eighth-place finish, while Oertel was ninth with a time of 14:37.96.
On the short-track, the Spartans were led by senior Kyle Sweeney, who netted a 54.42 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish in seventh-place overall.
In the field, freshman Ryan Libiran continued a string of strong, personal performances in the high jump competition, placing fifth in the event. Libiran's leap of 6-6 3/4, tied the first-year Spartan with Ferris State's Joe Mielke, less than four inches out of first place.
Senior Jason Brown added a second-straight, runner-up finish in the shot-put competition. Brown, who placed second at the EMU Twilight Relays, a week ago, turned in a toss of 55-4 1/4, to continue a strong outdoor season.
Michigan State wraps up competition at the Hillsdale Relays on Saturday, April 29. Following tomorrow's competition, the Spartans will return home in preparation for the 2006 Big Ten Championships, May 12-14, at the Ralph Young Track and Field.
