Spartans Suffer 6-1 Setback Vs. Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan state women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback vs. Indiana on Saturday, April 22, 2006. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 13-9 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten play, while IU improves to 17-6 on the season, with a 7-2 mark in conference action. The lone Green and White point came from the No. 2 singles position, when junior Pascale Schnitzer dispatched Hoosier Laura McGaffigan, 7-5 6-0. Schnitzer was a perfect 2-0 on the day, having also teamed with freshman Anna Milosavljevic to net an 8-6 victory over Indiana's Alba Berdala and Cecile Perton, at No. 3 doubles.
Despite the efforts of Schnitzer and Milosavljevic, Michigan State put itself into an early hole by losing the doubles point. The Spartan's top tandem, of sophomore Christine Bader and junior Sarah Andrews fell to Sarah Batty and McGaffigan, 8-1, while junior Jessica Baron and freshman Stephanie Kebler lost to Sigrid Fischer and Brianna Williams, 8-4.
Indiana maintained its early momentum, taking five of the six singles matches. Perton knocked off Milosavljevic, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 and Bader dropped a, 6-2, 6-2, decision to Batty, at No. 1, putting the Spartans in a 0-3 hole. Schnitzer staved off elimination with her victory at No. 2, but the Hoosiers clinched the victory when Berdala defeated Andrews in straight-sets, 6-4 6-2.
The Spartans never stopped battling; Kebler forced a third set before bowing out, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, to Fischer and Baron pushed her match to a super tie-breaker before falling, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, to Berdala, at No. 5.
Michigan State will return to action tomorrow, in the regular-season finale, vs. Penn State. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 23.
