
Spartans Drop 6-1 Decision At Iowa

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team traveled to Iowa City for its first road match since March 7. The Spartans fell, 6-1, at the hands of the host Iowa Hawkeyes. No. 40 Iowa improves to 11-3 and 3-0 in the Big Ten, while MSU falls to 10-6 and 1-3 in conference play.
The Spartans' lone win of the match came when junior Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) beat Kayla Berry in the No. 5 singles match. Andrews took the first set, 6-4, but Berry won the next, 6-3, forcing a tie-breaker set that Andrews took 1-0 (10-8).
Sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) faced No. 33 Meg Racette in the No.1 singles match and lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Bader and Andrews also lost to Racette and doubles partner, Jacqueline Lee, 8-3.
In others doubles play, junior Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and freshman Marianne Eelens (Noord, Aruba) were blanked, 8-0, by the duo of sophomore Milica Veselinovic and freshman Krissy Dowlin. Schnitzer's No. 2 singles match was the first to end as she was defeated by Hillary Mintz, 6-0, 6-1. Doubles partner, Eelens, also lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to fellow freshman Merel Beelen.
Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) and Jessica Baron (Mimai, Fla.) lost to Mintz and Berry, 8-4, allowing the Hawkeyes to sweep the doubles matches. Baron and Kebler also lost their No. 3 and 4 singles matches as well. Baron fell to Veselinovic, 6-1, 6-3, and Kebler was defeated by Lee, 6-2, 6-2.
The Spartans look to improve their record tomorrow, as they face Big Ten opponent Minnesota. The Gophers are now 3-11 and 0-3 in the Big Ten after falling to No. 32 Michigan today. Play will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
