MSU Women's Tennis Blanks The Zips

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The MSU women's tennis team took to the court Saturday against the Akron Zips, in one final tune-up before taking on the Michigan Wolverines to open conference play this Wednesday. The Spartans won 7-0, taking all nine of the matches and improving their record to 9-3 overall.
Michigan State captured all three doubles matches, giving up only two points in three matches. At the No.1 doubles spot, Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) and Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) defeated sophomore Amy Sherlock and junior Jenna Larson by a score of 8-0. Freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) and junior Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) were also successful, winning their doubles match 8-1. Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and freshman Marianne Eelens (Noord, Aruba) teamed at the No. 3 spot to defeat Lindsey Berry and Kerry Langworthy, 8-1.
In singles play, the Spartans took all six matches in straight sets. In the No.1 singles slot, sophomore Bader defeated freshman Tanya Gombera, 6-2, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, Schnitzer won handily by a score of 6-1, 6-0, over Langworthy. Baron also continued her winning ways, disposing of Sherlock, 6-0, 6-1, giving her ten wins in her last 11 matches.
MSU freshmen Kebler and Eelens also chipped in with wins as well. Kebler won 6-3, 6-1 over Larson, playing in the No.4 singles spot, while Eelens defeated freshman Berry in the No. 6 singles match.
Junior Sarah Andrews rounded out the Spartans line-up Saturday, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over freshman Alyssa Carlson.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. when the Michigan Wolverines come to East Lansing to open Big Ten play.
