SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The men's track and field team continued to set personal records at the Meyo Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 4, at a meet that featured top teams from the Big Ten, SEC and Big XII. Notre Dame hosted the event at the Loftus Sports Center in South Bend, Ind.
"Our team set a lot of personal records this weekend, and that's how to make progress," said interim head coach Walt Drenth. "We made progress as a team, and our team was very engaged in each event."
Junior Jason Brown (South Bend, Ind.) celebrated his homecoming with a personal-best throw of 16.73 meters (54-10.75) in the shot put, good for fourth place. Junior Dewayne Lewis (Denver, Colo.) recorded a personal-best as well, finishing the 60-meter dash in 6.87 seconds.
Junior Phil Marlatt (Williamston, Mich.) narrowly missed recording an NCAA Provisional time in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth with a time of 1:49.52.
Several other Spartans recorded top five finishes against stiff competition as well. Junior Jim Pancoast (Stevensville, Mich) finished second in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:25.60, while senior Julien Williams (Windermere, Fla.) recorded a 7.38-meter (24-2.50) leap in the long jump, good for a fourth-place finish.
"Out talent is here, and if we continue to act like champions, we will get better and compete," coach Drenth said.
The Spartans return to action next weekend, Feb. 10-11, when they travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic.
