WILMINGTON, N.C. - Michigan State junior Sara Brown shot the best round of her career, propelling her to the top of the leaderboard with two rounds completed at the Landfall Tradition. Brown finished Saturday's play at 3-under 69 and has totaled a two-day score of 1-under 143. As a team, Michigan State is in second place, 11 strokes back of leader Virginia, at 607 (305-302).
"Sara was very focused and was just in a zone today," MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll stated. "She played with confidence, and I was very pleased with her performance. We also got two nice scores from Laura (Kueny) and Mandi (McConnell)."
Brown is the only individual under par after two rounds. Her round of 69 tied for the third best 18-hole score in school history. She recorded four birdies and bogeyed just one hole, a par four, on the par-71 6,115-yard Jack Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall. ¬¬ Kueny cut two strokes off her first round score, carding a 75 in the second round, and is currently in ninth with an 8-over 152. One stroke back of Kueny is McConnell, tied for 11th place (76-77--153).
"We made good ground today, but are stilling looking for that fourth score," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "The back, ocean-front nine is very difficult. Winds were at about 15-20 mph, with 25-30 mph gusts."
Senior Heather Rose dropped four spots on the leaderboard after shooting an 81 on the day. She enters the final round tied for 29th at 159.
Senior Rachel Meikle is the fifth Spartan competing and has totaled a score of 172 (87-85), tying for 55th.
Tomorrow's third and final round of the Landfall Tradition begins at 8:23 a.m.
