EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior center Paul Davis (Rochester, Mich.) was named the men's basketball Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday. In two games last week, Davis averaged 20.5 points and 11.0 rebounds, shooting 55.6 percent from the field and 100 percent from the foul line, leading the Spartans to a pair of victories over ranked opponents. This marks the second time Davis has been honored this season, after being recognized on Nov. 28.
Davis opened the week with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 from the foul line, adding 10 rebounds in an 87-73 win over No. 9/8 Indiana. He followed that performance with 18 points and 12 rebounds in a 62-59 double-overtime win at No. 19/16 Ohio State. In addition, Davis recorded three assists, three blocks and two steals against the Buckeyes.
For the season, Davis is averaging 18.5 points and a Big Ten-leading 10.0 rebounds. His two double-doubles last week give him a Big Ten-best 10 on the season. This is the fifth time Davis has received the weekly Big Ten honor during his career. In addition to his award earlier this season, he was also recognized once last season (Dec. 13, 2004) and twice during the 2003-04 campaign (Jan. 19, 2004 & Feb. 2, 2004).
The Spartans and Davis return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Iowa in East Lansing (Noon, ESPN).
