Women's Golf Places Second At Lady Northern Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State women's golf team finished second in the 12-team Lady Northern Invitational at the Indiana University Golf Course Sunday afternoon. The Spartans posted a three-round total of 887 (298-294-295) to finish second behind Purdue.
Sophomore Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) shot a 221 (74-73-74) to finish in a tie for ninth. Brown was the only Spartan to better 75 in all three rounds.
Junior Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) also finished with a total of 221 (73-75-73) to tie for ninth. This is the second straight year that McConnell has finished in the top 10 at the Lady Northern.
Senior Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) fired a 224 (75-73-76) to tie for 15th, while junior Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) carded a 226 (76-78-72) and ended up tied for 19th. Meikle's final round of even-par 72 was the best round of the day for the Spartans.
Junior Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) tied for 23rd with a score of 229 (79-73-77), and sophomore Jordyn Wells (Bethel Park, Pa.) recorded a 233 (77-76-80) to tie for 34th.
Purdue took home the team title, shooting an impressive 867 (288-286-293) to better the Spartans by 20 shots. Maria Hernandez of Purdue and Samantha Richdale of Illinois State were declared co-champions at 3-under-par 213.
The Spartans next action will be in three weeks (Oct. 14-15) at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
