EAST LANSING, Mich. -
The Michigan State women's tennis team opens its fall season against Cincinnati, Detroit Mercy, Illinois, IUPUI and Louisville this weekend (Sept. 23-25) as it hosts The Yonex Spartan Cup. Matches will be played at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts and will begin at 9 a.m. If inclement weather occurs, matches will be played at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
2004 The Yonex Spartan Cup: Last year, MSU advanced four players into the finals and picked up one championship title. Junior Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) battled a three-set match against Eastern Michigan's Laura Fernandez after dropping the first set, 4-6. Andrews snapped back to take the second and third sets and was named the "B" flight singles champion.
Keri Thompson, landed a spot in the "A" flight singles last year as a senior against EMU'S Victoria Domina. Thompson captured the first set, 6-3, but Domina edged back to grab the next two sets to be named the "A" flight singles champion.
In her first tournament as a Spartan, sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) defeated Miami of Ohio's Victoria Pulido, 7-5, 6-3, in the "A" flight consolation finals.
Karen Gustafson joined Bader last year as a senior in the doubles consolation final. The duo won by default after EMU's Catherina Bestahorn and Flavia Micati were not in attendance.
New Season, New Team: MSU welcomes three new members to the roster including two players from abroad. Marianna Eelens (Noord, Aruba), Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) look to add depth at both singles and doubles.
The Spartans return five starters for the 2005-06 year with added experience at all positions. MSU looks to gain experience in the fall season in hopes of becoming a threat in the Big Ten Conference this year.
Sophomores: Christine Bader, Jaylen Musselman (Muskegon, Mich.), juniors: Sarah Andrews, Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) and Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) senior: Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.)
MSU will continue its fall season at Ann Arbor next weekend in the Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 2) and will host the NCAA Fall Regional on Oct. 20-25.
