
Michelle Carson Named CoSIDA Second-Team Academic All-American

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior track standout Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Man.) has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Women's University Division Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team. Carson became eligible for the Academic All-American team after being selected to the Academic All-District IV First Team June 3.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 on a scale of a 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Carson is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American as she earned first-team honors in both 2003 and 2004. In addition, she joins men's basketball standout Chris Hill as the second Spartan student-athlete this season to be a three-time Academic All-American as Hill was a first-team honoree in 2004 and 2005 and a third-team selection in 2003.
Carson, who holds a 3.95 GPA in dietetics, is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She competed during the outdoor season and was a regional qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the MSU track team. She placed 10th in that event at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and eighth at the Drake Relays. Carson also placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run at the MSU Invitational.
