LUBBOCK, Texas - With a seventh-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Central Regional Championship on Saturday, May 7, Michigan State women's golf advances to the NCAA Championships for the fifth time in the last six years. The 2005 NCAA Championships will be held at Sunriver Resort in Corvallis, Ore., May 17-20.
MSU shot a third-round 302 Saturday to close out the 2005 NCAA Central Regional Championship with a three-round score of 909 (300-307-302) and a seventh-place showing. This year's Central Regional Championship was played at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.
"The girls did great," said MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "The conditions were tough. It was an open course and we played in the wind. It really showed how tough our team played in the weather conditions. Everyone on the team contributed in one round or another.
"This team really came on strong down the stretch. I'm so excited to coach this team and see how far they have come this season. It's such a thrill to know that we return the entire team next season."
Auburn took top honors with a three-round score of 896. In addition to MSU and Auburn, Texas A&M (903), Missouri (905), Arizona State (906), Tulsa (908), Purdue (908) and Arkansas (915) also advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Individually, freshman Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) paced the Spartans, finishing tied for 20th with a 226. Both players shot a 75 on Saturday to close out play. It marked the fourth top-20 finish of the season for both Brown and Meikle to pace the squad.
Auburn's Diana Ramage took medalist honors, finishing with a 212 (68-77-67).
Sophomore Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished tied for 37th with a 230 (75-74-81), while sophomore Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) finished tied for 57th with a 233 (74-82-77).
