MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Freshman starting pitcher Mark Sorensen (Northville, Mich.) threw six scoreless innings to help Michigan State complete its non-conference schedule with a 11-0 shutout victory over Central Michigan on Tuesday, May 17 at CMU's Theunissen Stadium. With the win, MSU improves its record to 21-28, while CMU falls to 35-15 on the year.
The Spartans jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior third baseman Erik Morris (Orchard Lake, Mich.) lined an RBI single through the right side, scoring sophomore shortstop Troy Krider (Coldwater, Mich.) from second base. Krider reached base on an infield bunt single and advanced to second after sophomore right fielder Adam Tripp (Saugus, Calif.) walked on the next play. MSU claimed a 3-0 lead in the third inning on freshman designated hitter Tony Clausen's (Jenison, Mich.) two-run triple to right field.
The Spartans added five runs with two outs in the fifth inning to build a comfortable 8-0 advantage. A two-RBI single by sophomore catcher Kris Morris (Jenison, Mich.) and freshman second baseman Steve Gerstenberger's (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) RBI double highlighted the five-run outburst.
Run-scoring singles from freshman center fielder Ryan Sontag (Monroe, Mich.), Krider and Tripp brought home three more runs in the ninth inning to complete the scoring for Michigan State.
