COLUMBUS, Ohio - Red-shirt junior Tim Day (West Chester, Ohio) posted his first complete game shutout victory since 2002, helping the Michigan State baseball team defeat Ohio State, 2-0, Friday, April 15 at OSU's Bill Davis Stadium. Day (4-3) allowed eight hits and tied a season-high with five strikeouts. With the win, MSU improves to 13-17 (4-5 Big Ten), while Ohio State drops its record to 17-11 (3-6 Big Ten).
Michigan State used a two-run rally with no outs to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Sophomore right fielder Adam Tripp (Saugus, Calif.) and senior catcher Erik Morris (Orchard Lake, Mich.) started the inning with back-to-back singles off OSU starting pitcher Dan DeLucia. After sophomore left fielder Ryan Basham (Lowell, Ind.) walked to load the bases, junior third baseman Alan Cattrysse (Chatham, Ont.) lined a two-run single through the right side of the infield.
Ohio State managed to load the bases in the eighth and ninth innings, but Day worked his way out of both situations to earn his fourth win of the season.
Tripp led the Spartans offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Cattrysse finished the game hitting 1-for-4 at the plate.
Sophomore Jacob Howell went 2-for-2 at the plate to pace the Ohio State offense. DeLucia (2-2) took the loss for the Buckeyes, giving up two runs on five hits in five and one-third innings of work.
The teams continue the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16, beginning at 1:05 p.m.
