EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior forward Alan Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) was named the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week for men's basketball on Monday, March 7. In Michigan State wins over Northwestern and Penn State, he averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals, shooting 61.5 percent from the field. Iowa's Jeff Horner shares the honor with Anderson, having averaged 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists in a pair of Hawkeye victories, including hitting the game-winning shot with 3.2 seconds left in a 74-72 win over Ohio State.
It is the first time in his career that Anderson has received the weekly honor, as he joins Paul Davis as the only Spartans to be recognized by the Big Ten this year. Davis was honored on Dec. 13, 2004, after a 20-point, 8-rebound effort against Stanford.
In a 69-58 win at Northwestern (March 2), Anderson led the Spartans with 22 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 7-of-7 from the foul line, including 6-of-6 in the final 1:24. On Senior Night against Penn State (March 5), Anderson recorded his second-career double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He was 9-of-14 from the floor, connecting on a career-high four 3-pointers in six attempts. He tallied three steals in each contest.
Anderson is MSU's leading scorer in Big Ten games, averaging 14.4 points, and ranks second on the squad in rebounding with 6.1 boards per contest. After not scoring more than 18 points in the first 116 games of his career, he has scored more than 20 points in three of the last four contests.
