Men's Golf Set To Defend Title At Landfall Tradition

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The men's golf team closes the fall schedule and looks to defend its title at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., this weekend (Oct. 28-30). The Spartans captured the 2004 crown in record-setting fashion, tying the tournament record with a 281-285-285 - 851 total, four shots ahead of second-place Duke. In addition, the 13-under-par total remains the third-best 54-hole team score in program history.
The 12-team field includes seven teams ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 40, highlighted by No. 8 Minnesota. Coastal Carolina (No. 28), Tulsa (No. 31), Texas A&M (No. 33), Purdue (No. 36), Illinois (No. 37), and Michigan State (No. 39) round out the top-40 ranked teams in attendance, while Memphis, UNC-Wilmington, Ohio State, Virginia Commonwealth, and Virginia Tech complete the field.
Individually, junior Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) has led Michigan State throughout the fall. Ranked No. 64 in the Golfweek/Sagarin index, Harmon has two top-five finishes on the season and leads the team with a 72.58 scoring average.
Sophomore Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) joins Harmon as the only players who have competed in all four fall events. Brehm is second on the team with a 73.08 scoring average and is coming off a second-place finish at the Duke Classic.
At last year's Landfall Tradition, the Spartans placed four players in the top 20, including Harmon's fourth-place finish and Brehm's 13th-place finish.
Hosted by UNC-Wilmington, the 54-hole Landfall Tradition will be played at the par-72, 6,992-yard Jack Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall. Play starts with tee-times at 8:17 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, while Sunday's final round will begin at 7:30 a.m.
