Two Spartans Clinch Titles at Northwestern Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - After three days of action at the Northwestern Invitational the Michigan State women's tennis team remained competitive and brought home two singles titles. Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) grabbed her second on the season and freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) clinched her first title as a Spartan. MSU has now garnished four singles titles during the fall season.
Baron went 4-0 on the weekend to pick up her second career title. Earlier this year, Baron clinched the "B" Flight Singles Title at the Yonex Spartan Cup. Baron's perfect mark included two victories over Big Ten Opponents. Baron defeated Ohio State's Angela DiPastina, 6-2, 6-1 and Wisconsin's Erin Jobe, 6-2, 6-4.
"Jessica was very composed and played a mature game," said head coach Tim Bauer. "She played a very effective game to cruise through her matches."
Kebler went 3-0 in singles play on the weekend including a 6-3, 6-3, victory over fellow Spartan Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa).
"Stephanie played some great shots," said Bauer. "She showed a lot of growth on her consistency to build points."
The MSU doubles game continues to improve with each tournament as Baron and Kebler teamed up to build a 3-2 mark. The Spartan tandem recorded two victories over Wisconsin's Jobe and Morgan Tuttle.
"Our doubles game isn't where we want it to be," said Bauer. "We have a long way to go, but we are heading in the right direction. We will continue to work on our game to prepare for regionals next week."
The Spartans will take a break from tournament play and will continue action on Oct. 20-25 in East Lansing when they host the ITA Midwest Regional Championship.
