EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team opened Big Ten Conference play Friday by falling to No. 11 Illinois, 1-0, in overtime at Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich. With the loss, MSU falls to 6-2 (0-1 Big Ten) on the season, while Illinois improves its record to 7-0 (1-0 Big Ten).
Both teams held each other scoreless throughout regulation before Jessica Bayne scored just over five minutes into overtime on an assist from Natasha Karniski to win the game for the Fighting Illini.
"We matched up with a very good team and Illinois is a top-10 program in the country," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We've played two straight games head-to-head with very good teams and it just wasn't our day in overtime."
Illinois held the advantage in shot attempts (18-13) and corner kicks (5-4) over the Spartans. Senior goalkeeper Erin Carlson (Sr./Portage) recorded five saves for MSU.
Michigan State will take on Northwestern in another Big Ten contest at Old College Field on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Noon.
