EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's golf completed the final day of play (Sunday, Sept. 12) at the Lady Northern Invitational finishing in fourth place overall. The Spartans shot an 899 (305-291-303) in their opening event of the 2004-05 season. Hosted at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich., the tournament featured 54 total holes of play, with the final 18 being played Sunday.
"A lot of bright spots can be taken away from this tournament," said eighth-year head coach Stacy Slobdnik-Stoll. "Being such a young team, with three sophomores and three freshmen, there are a lot of positives that we can take away from this event. I am very pleased with our performance."
Michigan took the 2004 Lady Northern title, shooting an 881 (294-291-296). Ohio State (885) and Missouri (886) finished second and third, respectively. Purdue (906) rounded out the top-five teams, finishing fifth overall.
Missouri's Maria Ohlsson won Lady Northern medalist honors, finishing the weekend with a 214 (75-66-73).
Sophomore Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) led the way for the Spartans, finishing the tournament with a 224 (73-77-74), good for 10th place overall. It marks the first top-10 finish of her career. McConnell's best outing of the season last year came at the 2004 Big Ten Championships where she tied for 17th.
"This is not an unexpected finish for Mandi," Slobodnik-Stoll commented on her only top-10 finisher. "She was one of the best players in Michigan when we recruited her, and I believe that she has settled in with the team and knows what is expected of her. She had a great outing."
In her first collegiate start for the Green and White, freshman Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) completed the event shooting a 227 (77-75-75). She finished in a five-way tie for 18th place.
"Sara is a really talented player," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "She will be a great player for us, one of the best on our team in the future. I am very happy to see our team handling the nerves of opening the season, and going out there and playing well."
Redshirt freshman Kristen Polanski (Livonia, Mich.) and sophomore Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) each shot a 228. They finished in a three-way tie for 23rd in the Spartans' season opener.
Rounding out the roster for Michigan State, sophomore Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) shot a 229 (77-71-81), finishing in a two-way tie for 26th overall, while freshman Jordyn Wells (Bethel Park, Pa.) shot a 245 (81-83-81). She finished in a two-way tie for 73rd place.
Michigan State will hit the links next weekend (Sept. 18-19) as they play host to the 22nd annual Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course. MSU will be defending last season's Fossum title.
