EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head men's track and field coach Darroll Gatson has announced that Ty Sevin (pronounced SAY-van) has been added to the Spartan staff as an assistant coach. Sevin, a former All-American at Texas A&M and member of the U.S. National Team in the javelin, will coach MSU's throwers, jumpers and multi-event competitors. "I'm excited to have Ty join our staff," said Gatson. "Ty brings a lot as far as knowledge, because he has done so many things as a competitor. He has a different background and knowledge of training techniques that can really enhance our program, and he brings confidence to us as a program." Sevin has served as owner and operator of Peak Performance Sports for the past four years in College Station, Texas, organizing and structuring weekly practices for 34 club athletes. He also served as a volunteer assistant track coach at Texas A&M, working with the Aggie pole vaulters in 1999-2001 and again in 2004. During his tenure at Texas A&M, Sevin coached Aggie vaulters to Big 12 Championships on both the men's and women's side. Four of his vaulters qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2001, including three men who all set personal bests while clearing 18 feet. Among the athletes he is currently coaching through Peak Performance Sports is Jim Davis, a U.S. Olympic Trials pole vault finalist who vaulted a personal best of 19 feet. Sevin was an athlete consultant for the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., from 2002-03, instructing and supervising resident athletes while training at the on-site facility. He was involved in the daily practice schedules of throwers, pole vaulters and multi-event athletes. He also had a stint as a women's assistant track coach at Oklahoma State from 1997-99, and worked as a graduate assistant strength coach at Texas A&M in 1995-96. Sevin is an accomplished athlete, ranking No. 11 all-time in the U.S. in the javelin with a personal best of 80.16m (263-0). He was ranked as high as No. 47 in the world in the javelin in 2002, was ranked fourth in the U.S. in 2000 and also made the U.S. top 10 list in 1993 and 1994. He was a member of the U.S. National team in 1993, 2000 and 2002, and competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1996, 2000 and 2004. Sevin started his collegiate career at Louisiana State, where he played on the football team from 1990-92 in addition to competing in track and field. He was a member of LSU's national championship track team in 1990, when he was a finalist at the Southeastern Conference meet in the decathlon and javelin. Sevin then moved on to Texas A&M, where he was an All-American in 1993-94. He was the Southwestern Conference champion in the javelin in 1994. "This is an exciting time for us," added Gatson. "There are a lot of changes going on and sometimes change is good. This is a new beginning for our program with Ty and (new men's cross country and assistant track coach) Walt Drenth coming in, and it's going to be a fun time."
