EAST LANSING, Mich. - Just a few notebook items to keep you up-to-date with the Spartan women's golf team. * Sophomores Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) competed at the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at The Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa., Aug. 9-10. McConnell finished tied for 107th after shooting a two-round 161 (79-82), while Rose posted a 165 (84-81) and tied for 125th. Neither player advanced to match play. * Former Spartan All-Americans Emily Bastel (1998-2002) and Allison Fouch (2000-04) had impressive showings at the Betty Puskar FUTURES Golf Classic at the Pines Country Club in Morgantown, W.V., Aug. 6-8. Bastel finished tied for second with a 2-under 214, while Fouch tied for fourth at 1-under 215. In addition, former Spartan Stacy Snider (1998-2002) finished tied for 67th. The trio will compete at The $70,000 The City of Albany FUTURES Golf Classic in Albany, N.Y., Aug. 13-15. All three players will be looking for their LPGA Tour card for the 2004-05 season. To earn the card, a player must finish in the top five on the FUTURES Tour money list. Players ranked Nos. 5-10 are exempt to the final stage of qualifying school, a tournament where about 15 percent of the field can earn a Tour card. * Several current and former Spartans will compete at the 2004 GAM Championship at the Owosso Country Club in Owosso, Mich., Aug. 16-17. Current Spartans scheduled to compete are include: junior Jennifer Johnson (Okemos, Mich.), junior Christy Jonkhoff (Traverse City, Mich.), sophomore Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.), red-shirt freshman Kristen Polanski (Livonia, Mich.), junior Kelly Thesier (Brighton, Mich.) and head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. In addition, former Spartan Sarah Martin (2000-04) and Joan Garety (1975-78) will play in this year's championship. * On Monday, Aug. 9, at the Fidra Midwest Collegiate Series Tour Championship at the Elcona Country Club in Bristol, Ind., junior Jennifer Johnson (Okemos, Mich.) finished tied for second with a 156 (79-77). Johnson finished just one stroke behind medalist Kylene Pulley who shot a 155. Sophomore Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) also competed at the tour championship and finished tied for sixth with a 160 (78-82).
