AUSTIN, Texas - Michigan State senior Steve Manz finished a disappointing 18th in the preliminaries of the shot put Thursday at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships. Only the top 12 performers in the preliminaries advance to Saturday's final.
Manz entered the competition seeded fifth in the competition based on his school record through of 64-11 1/4 May 7 at the Len Paddock Invitational. However, after fouling on his first attempt, Manz was able to post a top throw of 58-9 1/2 which put him in 18th place. It was an unfortunate time for Manz to fail to reach 60 feet in a competition for the first time since fouling out of the Mt. SAC Relays April 18. Manz, who holds MSU records in both the shot put and discus, was unable to repeat as an All-American after finishing 11th at last year's outdoor championships.
The men's track and field outdoor season has come to a close as Manz was the only member of the men's squad competing in Austin.
