Allison Fouch Finishes Tied For 16th At NCAA Championships

OPELIKA, Ala. - After weather delayed the final round at the 2004 NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Friday, play finally concluded on Saturday, May 22, at the par 72, 6,215-yard Grand National Golf Course in Opelika, Ala. Michigan State senior Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the Spartans as she finished tied for 16th with a 291 (70-72-73-76).
Fouch's 291 was the second-lowest 72-hole tournament score in school history. In addition, her 16th-place showing was the second-best finish by a Spartan at the national championships behind Emily Bastel's 13th-place showing in 2001.
As a team, Michigan State placed 24th with a 72-hole score of 1,215 (302-310-298-305). UCLA won this year's title with a final score of 1,148 (289-283-286-290), while Oklahoma State was second with a 1,151 (288-293-282-288) and Duke placed third with a 1,159 (289-284-292-294).
A total of three strokes separated the top three individuals as Cal's Sarah Huarte took medalist honors with a 278 (73-69-67-69). Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin was second with a 279 and UCLA's Susie Mathews placed third with a 280.
Seniors Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio) and Sarah Martin (Grosse Ile, Mich.), who were making their final appearances for the Green and White, finished tied for 101st and 107th, respectively. Kersten shot a 309 (79-78-77-75), including a 75 in Friday's final round. Meanwhile, Martin was one stroke behind Kersten with a 310 (75-83-72-80).
Freshman Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) and sophomore Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) tied for 116th with identical scores of 317. Burleigh's 317 included rounds of 82, 83, 76 and 76, while Rose had rounds of 78, 77, 84 and 78.
