Spartans Finish Second To Central Michigan At MSU Twilight Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State women's track and field team hosted the Michigan State Twilight double-dual meet this evening (April 30) at the Ralph Young Track in East Lansing, Mich. Central Michigan defeated MSU 256-247, while State earned a 278-125 victory over Detroit Mercy. CMU also defeated Detroit in the final dual score, 317-122.
The Spartans won 13 out 19 events, including capturing the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:45.00, while finishing the 4x100-meter relay in second (50.10).
State???sup>TMs top performers were seniors Sarah Adelaine and Sherita Williams. Adelaine broke an MSU-all time record by winning the hammer throw with a toss of 191-07(58.39m), while also capturing the discus throw with a toss of 151-00(46.02m) and the shot put with a heave of 47-05 1/4(14.46m). Adelaine beat her previous school record in the hammer throw by nearly 10 feet, besting the 181-1 throw she had at the Spartan Open.
Williams bettered her own MSU-all time record in the long jump with a leap of 20-02 1/4(6.15m) and also took the triple jump title with a leap of 47-07 1/2 (12.99m). Williams had previous established the long jump record in 2002 with a jump of 20-00 1/2.
Also winning events for State were senior Jamie Krzyminski, who took the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:33.05, freshman Marquita Allen, who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.21, freshman Cynetheia Rooks, who captured the 100-meter dash (11.95) and the 200-meter dash (24.34), sophomore Sarah Stornant, who won the 800-meter run (2:14.65), junior Mickie Rzepka, who took the pole vault with a leap of 12-03 1/2 (3.75m) and freshman Melinda Buckmaster, who won the javelin title for the third time this season with a toss of 133-00 (40.54m).
Krzyminski also finished second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:05.63, while senior Cindy Durocher placed third (17:05.66), freshman Katie Kelly finished fifth (17:18.33), sophomore Michelle Rafferty placed sixth (17:36.50), junior Katie Anderson finished seventh (17:40.38) and sophomore Leigha Christian placed eighth with a time of 18:28.35.
Also competing well for State, freshman Genevieve Gourlay placed third overall in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.52, while placing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.32. Sophomore Aimee Keenan finished third in the 800-meter run (2:17.32), junior Naomi Williams finished the 200-meter dash in fourth overall with a time of 26.03 and senior Sarah Pepera finished fifth in the 1500-meter run (4:43.69).
Competing well in the field, freshman Michelle Rossio finished second in the discus throw with a toss of 149-01(45.45m), while placing fourth in the hammer with a throw of 145-11(44.48m) and the shot put with a heave of 44-02 (13.46m). Junior Rebecca Warner tied Central Michigan???sup>TMs Colleen Johnson for second in the pole vault with a leap of 11-05 3/4 (3.50m) and sophomore Taren James finished second in the long jump with a distance of 18-05 3/4(5.63m), while placing third in the triple jump with a leap of 39-00 1/2 (11.90m).
Michigan State will compete at the Len Paddock Invitational next Friday-Saturday (May 7-8) in Ann Arbor, Mich.
