ATHENS, Ga. - Michigan State women's golf sits in fifth place after day one of the 2004 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The Spartans shot an opening-round 297 and are just six strokes off the leader, Ohio State (291).
Eight of the top-25 teams in the country are at the University of Georgia Golf Course as No. 6 Ohio State leads the field with a 291. No. 1 Duke and No. 5 Georgia are tied for second with a 292, while No. 8 Auburn is fourth with a 293.
Individually, seniors Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio) pace the Spartans. Fouch and Kersten are tied for fourth with Florida State's Katie Quinney with a 70.
Duke's Brittany Lang leads the field with a 66, while Auburn's Nicole Hage is second with a 68.
Freshman Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) is tied for 53rd after shooting a 78, while senior Sarah Martin (Grosse Ile, Mich.) sits tied for 62nd with a 79. Sophomore Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) rounds out the Spartan line-up in a tie for 73rd with an 80.
The second round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic tees off Saturday at 9 a.m., while the final round will be played on Sunday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
