EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's basketball teams opened the 2004-05 season with "Hometown Hoops" on Friday night-Saturday morning at the Breslin Center. After signing autographs for nearly an hour, the teams were introduced to the crowd in stylish fashion.
One by one, the men's team was introduced as baby and childhood photos were shown on the Breslin Center big screen. After all the players had been introduced, it was time for Coach Izzo's arrival. This year, the entire Izzo family arrived in a bus.
Taking a microphone to address the crowd, Izzo explained that this year his entrance wasn't as grand, but he planned on making a grand exit, referring to his championship dreams. In keeping with the "Hometown Hoops" theme, Izzo told the nearly 13,000 fans in attendance that although he was born in Iron Mountain, Mich., the entire MSU and greater Lansing community had become his hometown and they were all a part of his extended family. As the entire team left the court, they loaded the bus, symbolizing the beginning of a championship journey.
