Women's Golf Finishes Third At Lady Northern Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team finished in third place after the completion of the final round of play (Sunday, Sept. 28) at the Lady Northern Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
Due to a two-hour rain delay in day one's action (Sept. 27), the second round of the tournament was unable to be completed because of darkness. The round was finished today, with teams starting the final round immediately afterward.
The Spartans finished invitational action shooting an 897 (298-302-297), including a third-round best 297. Texas took the tournament title, finishing with an 893 (298-297-298). Ohio State finished in second place with an 895 at their home field, Scarlet Golf Course. Oklahoma took the number four spot with a 900, and Indiana tied with Kent State for fifth place each shooting a 926.
Ohio State's Allison Hanna, Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum and Texas' Janice Olivencia all finished the tournament tied for first place shooting a 218. The trio went to a playoff hole to determine the winner.
Freshman Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) led the way for the Spartans, shooting a 222 (76-75-71). Having finished yesterday's first round tied for 14th place, Rose jumped up eight spots through today's two rounds to finish sixth.
Rounding out the top 10 and finishing the tournament in an eighth place tie were senior Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.), sophomore Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.), and senior Sarah Martin (Grosse Isle. Mich). All three golfers finished with a 225.
Senior Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio) finished tied for 38th place shooting a 238 (79-82-77) and sophomore Jennifer Johnson (Okemos, Mich.) finished tied for 47th with a 240 (77-83-80) to round out the Spartan lineup.
MSU's women's golf team will head to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mercedes Benz Invitational October 19-21.
