EAST LANSING, Mich. -
The Michigan State women's golf team will be heading to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend (Sept. 27-28) as they look to improve on this season's stellar start at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate Invitational. The tournament, hosted at Ohio State's Scarlet Golf Course, will face off 14 teams in 54 total holes of play; 36 holes being played on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. each day.
Teams scheduled to compete include: Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, Kent State, Oklahoma and Texas.
The Spartans are looking to build on the success of their past two tournaments, having captured first place at both the Badger Invitational (at Wisconsin) and last week's Mary Fossum Invitational (at Michigan State). This weekend offers another challenge for the team.
Senior Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) looks to follow-up last week's impressive first-place finish with another good showing. She will be joined by teammates senior Sarah Martin (Grosse Ile, Mich.), senior Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio), sophomore Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.), sophomore Jennifer Johnson (Okemos, Mich.) and freshman Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio).
In consecutive outings, Fouch has earned medalist honors, both at the rain-shortened Badger Invitational shooting a 144 (73-71) and at the Mary Fossum Invitational shooting a 222 (72-77-73). Both Fouch and teammate Sarah Martin are ranked in the top 10 individuals in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index with Fouch ranking third and Martin seventh.
The Spartans, who are ranked No. 1 in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, have also finished well in back-to-back outings as a team. In both of their previous tournaments, the team has finished in first place, with each member of the Spartans finishing in the top 20 at the Badger Invitational, and six members of the team finishing in the top 10 at the Mary Fossum.
