Women's Tennis Concludes Play At Bronco Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team wrapped up its opening Fall tournament Sunday at the Bronco Invitational. Senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) highlighted the day with a three-set victory to win the Flight "A" singles consolation bracket over Marquette's Veronica Garcia-Briseno. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Lay rallied to win the second set, 6-4, and won the third-set single-game tie breaker, 8-5, to win her third straight match after dropping her opening match of the tournament.
Also in Flight "A" singles, sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) won a consolation match, 6-2, 6-2, over Kendra Clark of Eastern Michigan. Brady finished the tournament with a 2-2 singles mark.
In Flight "C" singles, freshman Sarah Andrews (Wanguni Darwin NT, Australia) dropped her match in the winner's bracket consolation, 6-1, 6-0, to Malena Remynse of Western Michigan. Andrews also posted a 2-2 record during the weekend.
MSU's fourth team member to compete in the invitational, junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.), won a bonus match over Annabelle Espinosa of Marquette, 6-4, 6-4. Gustafson had a 1-3 singles record during the event.
In doubles, Lay and Andrews dropped a bonus match to a duo from Illinois, 8-6, while Brady and Gustafson also slipped vs. a team from Illinois, 8-3.
The Spartans return to action Oct. 3-5 at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
