Women's Tennis Gets Fall Season Underway

Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team got the 2003 Fall season underway Friday, as four Spartans competed at the Bronco Invitational.
Freshman Sarah Andrews (Wanguni Darwin NT, Australia) was MSU's lone singles victor, earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ball State's Jill Wieman in Flight "C" singles. Andrews will battle Marquette's Dominika Dabrowski in the second round Saturday.
In Flight "A" singles, senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) fell to Cynthya Goulet of Illinois, 6-3, 6-3, and sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to No. 62 Frederika Girsang of Western Michigan.
MSU's fourth team member, junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.), was defeated by Karie Schlukebir of Indiana, 7-6, 6-0, in Flight "B" singles.
In Flight "A" doubles, Lay and Andrews dropped an 8-2 decision to a team from Indiana, before rebounding for an 8-6 win over a duo from Marquette.
In Flight "B" doubles, Brady and Gustafson fell to a tandom from Western Michigan, 8-4, before battling back for an 8-1 victory over a pair from Ball State.
Action at the Bronco Invitational will continue through Sunday.
