VERONA, Wis. - The Michigan State women's golf team won the 2003 Badger Invitational tournament title at University Ridge Golf Course on Sunday (Sept. 14). The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to the weather.
The Spartans shot a two-round score of 608 (303-305) to take home their first tournament title since March 19, 2002. Purdue (619), Wisconsin (627), Northwestern (629) and Arkansas-Little Rock (640) rounded out the top-five teams.
Senior Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won her second career tournament title after shooting a 73-71-144. In her final round, Fouch shot a 1-under 71 including an eagle on the par 5, hole 11 and birdies on holes 12, 14 and 18. Fouch and Wisconsin's Malinda Johnson tied for first, but Fouch won the playoff on the second hole to take medalist honors.
"It was nice to win," said Fouch. "We knew that we had the team part wrapped up, so our goal in the second round was to hold the lead and play a solid second round. We dealt with the weather that best that we could. This is a great way to start off the season, but we still feel that we can play even better.
"Malinda Johnson is one of the top players in the conference. She played very well and it was really nice to pull off the win in the playoff hole."
Senior Sarah Martin (Grosse Isle, Mich.) also turned in a top-five performance, finishing third with a 148 (73-75). The third-place finish was the best of Martin's career.
Sophomore Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.), who finished 14th with a 158 (77-81); senior Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio), who placed tied for 15th with a 159 (81-78) and freshman Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio), who finished tied for 17th with a 161 (80-81) round out the Spartan lineup.
Michigan State will host the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing Sept. 20-21.
