VERONA, Wis. - The Michigan State women's golf team sits in first place after completing the first round of the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course on Saturday (Sept. 13). MSU finished the day strong, shooting an opening-round 303. Purdue sits six strokes behind the Spartans in second place (309) and Northwestern (316) rounds out the leaderboard's top-three.
Heavy rains on Friday (Sept. 12) forced the first round of play to be postponed and completed on Saturday. Second-round action was scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was suspended around 1:20 p.m. due to poor weather conditions. Second-round play is now set for Sunday (Sept. 14), and the final round has been cancelled.
Leading the way for the Spartans are seniors Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Sarah Martin (Grosse Isle, Mich.), who are tied for second place, each shooting a 73. They sit one stroke behind tournament leader Malinda Johnson of Wisconsin (72).
Sophomore Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) is tied for sixth place overall with a 77, freshman Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) sits tied for 17th with an 80, and senior Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio) rounds out the Spartan squad tied for 20th with an opening-round 81.
Tournament play continues Sunday morning with teams teeing off at 9 a.m. Following the Badger Invitational, Michigan State will host the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing Sept. 20-21.
