Women's Soccer Suffers First Lost Of The Season

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State women's soccer lost to No. 8 West Virginia, 2-1, in a non-conference match on Monday (Sept. 1). West Virginia scored twice in the first half, while the Spartans were not able to score until the 56th minute of the second half. With the loss, MSU drops to 1-1 on the season as WVU improves to 1-1.
Mountaineer Lisa Zanti opened the scoring early in the ninth minute and Chrissie Abbott scored the second goal before the half was over. Spartan forward Trisha Kenny (Sr., Saginaw.) scored her first goal of the season with an assist from sophomore Nina Mastracci (Soph., Troy) to cut the deficit to one goal, but MSU was unable to score the equalizer.
This match was delayed 45 minutes midway through the first half due to lightning.
Spartan goalkeeper and Big Ten's Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 1), Stacy Heller (Sr., Madison, Wis.) recorded six saves this match.
Michigan State returns to action on the road to face Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich. on Friday (Sept. 5) at 4 p.m. The Spartans will then host Detroit on Sunday (Sept. 7) at noon.
