Michelle Carson Named First-Team Academic All-American

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Ontario, Canada) was named today to the 2003 Verizon University Division Academic All-America Women's Cross Country/Track & Field First Team, while junior Jamie Krzyminski (Corruna, Mich.) earned second-team honors.
Members of the Academic All-America team are student-athletes who must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Carson, a dietetics major with a 3.95 grade point average, earned All-America honors in cross country after placing 20th at the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships (20:25.6). Carson is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and a two-time All-Big Ten First-Team honoree. She won the Big Ten Individual Cross Country Championship with a time of 17:24.0 and also captured the individual titles at the Roy Griak and Spartan Invitationals. Carson was selected as the Women's Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2002 and was the top finisher for the Canadian National Team at the 2003 World Cross Country Championships.
Krzyminski, a finance major with a 3.89 GPA, earned All-America honors for the second-straight season by placing fifth in the 10,000-meter run at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In addition, she finished 16th in the 5,000 meters at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships and was the 2003 Big Ten Indoor Champion in the 5,000 and Outdoor Champion in the 10,000. Krzyminski set the school indoor record in the 5,000 and outdoor record in the 10,000 this year. She is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and a two-time All-Big Ten First-Team honoree in cross country. She placed second at the 2002 Big Ten Cross Country Championships and 33rd at the NCAA Championships.
