Men's Track and Field Continues At Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Freshman Chris Hohn (Pickney, Mich.) finished sixth in the decathlon at the 2003 Men's Big Ten Track and Field Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Backed by three third-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (16.31), pole vault (14-3?) and 1500-meter race (4:52.25), Hohn registered 6318 points.
The Spartans are currently in 10th at the conference championships, which are being held at the Beirman Track and Field Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Junior Steve Manz (West Branch, Mich.) finished eighth in the discus throw, with a 160-10. Manz finished fifth in the third flight of competition in the preliminary round, while freshman Derek Strittmatter (Quincy, Mich.) took eighth in the first flight.
Freshman Brian Sherwood (Fowlerville, Mich.) finished 14th in the high jump, posting a 6-7?. In initial flight event competition, sophomore Julien Williams (Orlando, Fla.) took seventh in the first flight of the long jump with a 22-11?.
In trials for tomorrow's finals, Carlos Alexander finished seventh in the first heat of the 100-meter dash (11.05). Although senior Andy Lixey (East Tawas, Mich.) finished third in the first heat of the 800-meter trials (153.18), neither met the cut for the finals.
The remaining events to determine the 2003 Big Ten Championships conclude tomorrow (May 18), beginning at 12:30 p.m.
