EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team fell to No. 23 Northwestern, 7-0 on Saturday (April 19) in Evanston. The Spartans fall to 8-13 overall and 0-9 in the Big Ten while the Wildcats improve to 15-8 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
In doubles action, junior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and sophomore Keri Thompson (Clark Lake) dropped an 8-0 decision to the No. 8 doubles team in the nation, Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush. Junior Josie Schmude (Traverse City) and freshman Marta Walasek (Ann Arbor) competed in their first career doubles match together at the No. 2 spot, but were defeated by Andrea Yung and Jamie Piesel, 8-1. Sophomores Kate Thomas (Long Beach, Calif.) and Karen Gustafson (East Lansing) fell at the No. 3 doubles spot, 8-3, to Ruth Barnes and Connie Chiang.
In singles competition, three Spartans picked up five games each but dropped their matches to a high-powered Wildcat squad. Thompson battled freshman Grier, who ranks No. 6 in the country for singles, but fell short at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-1. Grier currently holds a 22-match win streak. Lay fell to No. 62 Rush, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, while Gustafson came up short against Peisel, 6-2, 6-3.
MSU will wrap up its regular season on Sunday (April 20) against Wisconsin in Madison. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CT. Wisconsin boasts an 8-11 record overall and 3-5 Big Ten mark.
