No. 33 Michigan Defeats Spartan Women's Tennis, 5-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan State gained an early 1-0 advantage but fell 5-2 to No. 33 Michigan in women's tennis action Saturday night (March 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center. MSU is now 8-7 (0-3 Big Ten) for the season, while the Wolverines improve to 8-3 (2-1 Big Ten).
The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking two of the three doubles matches. Caroline Lay and Jean Willman fell 8-4 in the No. 1 spot, but the teams of Karen Gustafson and Kate Thomas and Keri Thompson and Josie Schmude won at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, to earn the point for MSU.
The Green and White carried the momentum of the doubles matches over to singles as five players grabbed the first set from the Wolverines. Freshman Jean Willman, at No. 2 singles, was the only player able to hold on for a victory, however, as Michigan stormed back to win five of the six singles matches.
Michigan State returns to action Saturday, March 29 to face Iowa in its Big Ten home opener.
