Michigan State's 141-pound redshirt freshman Andy Simmons fell, 5-2, to Iowa's Cliff Moore, and took second place to end the 41st Midlands Championship. Entering the final session of competition, Simmons stood alone as the only Spartan remaining in the prestigious, double-elimination event.
Simmons is MSU's only placewinner at the 2003 Midlands Championship. He was pre-seeded 10th at 141 pounds but lost his first match to Cal-Bakersfield's Roberto Vargas, 6-2, and dropped to the consolation bracket. He did not allow the early loss to faze him as he won six straight bouts, defeating the No. 5 seed Doug McGraw of Penn, sixth-seeded Robert Becker and pinning No. 1 seed Dylan Long of Northern Iowa.
Simmons is 15-5 on the season with three pins. He has earned placewinner honors in each of the last three tournaments in which he's wrestled, placing fifth at the MSU Open and taking champion honors at the North Carolina Open on Dec. 6.
The Spartans return to dual meet competition Jan. 6 when they fact Kent State in Kent, Ohio, at 7 p.m.
