Michigan State Wrestling Opens Competition at Midlands Championship

EVANSTON, Ill. - Michigan State wrestling traveled to Evanston, Ill., for Northwestern's 41st annual Midlands Championship. Each of MSU's 14 individuals lost in the championship bracket, falling to the consolation bracket.
At 125, Zach Frutiger lost to Northwestern's eighth-seeded John Velez by major decision, 13-2. At the same weight, Craig Trombly defeated Dan Fell of the Wildcat Wrestling Club, 6-2, only to lose to the No. 8 seed Heath Kim of Air Force, 5-3. Trombly ended the first session defeating Mike Silengo of Penn, 5-2.
At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Tony Greathouse dropped two consecutive matches to seeded competition. The first loss came against Kortney Lake of Adams, 5-0 while eighth-seeded Josh Keefe won in sudden victory, 4-2.
At the 141-pound weight class, Andy Simmons was the only Michigan State entry and the No. 10 seed. After drawing a bye in the first round, Simmons lost to Cal State Bakersfield's Roberto Vargas, 6-2.
At 149, Darren McKnight lost to 10th-seeded Matt Storniolo of Penn State, 6-2. McKnight then put together back-to-back victories, defeating Chicago's Jason Besse by major decision, 11-3 and San Francisco State's Luke Santos, 7-3.
At 157 pounds, freshman Glenn Murray lost to Cleveland State's Jason Effner by major decision, 16-3 while he won in the first round of wrestlebacks against Tennessee-Chattanooga's TJ Sayers by pin in 4:34. Murray rounded out the first session with a loss to Eastern Michigan's Chad Roush. 15-9. At the same weight, senior Arsen Alexsanyan defeated Jason Knipp of Iowa State, 4-1, before losing to Stanford's Matt Gentry, 5-0. Alexsanyan will face Amir Khan of Rutgers in the second session. Rounding out Michigan State entries at 157, Matt McCarty defeated Montana State's Stryder Davis, 3-0, and then fell to Sacred Heart's Robert Belville, 12-4. McCarty bounced back in consolation competition, defeating Ohio State's Nick Hapster, 5-1.
With no entries at 165, Anton Hall was MSU's only entry at 174 pounds. With a win over AJ Blahut of Lincoln, 10-2 and pinning Emory Wilson for his second-straight win before losing to top-seeded Joe Williams of Sunkist, 21-7.
At 184, senior Nate Mesyn lost to fifth-seeded Kurt Backes before defeating Ohio's Travis Smith, 5-0.
At 197 pounds, Jeff Clemens lost to ninth-seeded Marcus Schontube, 3-2, and will face J.D. Bergman of Ohio State in the second session.
At heavyweight, the only other seeded Spartan wrestler, No. 12 Mike Keenan defeated Michael Shedak, 3-0, before losing to No. 5 Russ Davie of Cleveland State, 3-0. Keenan will face Illinois' Chris Little in the second session. Spencer Nadolsky continued Michigan State competition at heavyweight, losing to sixth-seeded Rafael Davis, 7-3 before defeating both Matt Bogurnil, 9-4, and Joe Sapp, 7-5. Rounding out Spartan heavyweights, Max Lossen dropped two consecutive bouts to Lassen's Kelly Anudson, 3-1, and Chris Little, 3-2.
Michigan State results from Monday's second session were not available late Monday night. The Spartans continue competition at the Midlands Championship tomorrow with wrestling set to begin at noon at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.
