EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State played hosted to one of the nation's largest preseason wrestling tournaments in Jenison Field House Saturday, Nov. 8. Seventeen teams competed in over 12 hours of wrestling that narrowed the field down to each division's final eight competitors. Six Spartans wrestlers advanced in the MSU Open, including two with a chance to win the 174-pound division.
MSU's Andy Simmons (Fr., Williamston) is still alive in the consolation bracket of the 141-pound division. Despite losing his first match of the day, Simmons fought his way back, winning his next four contests. Wrestlers in the consolation bracket can reach third place but are out of competition for the gold and silver medals.
Spartan Darren McNight (So., Hixson, Tenn.) will also compete in the consolation bracket of the 149-pound division.
Two 174-pound Spartan wrestlers, Joe Williams (Fr., Orange, Calif.) and Anton Hall (Sr., Ada), are in the semifinals for their division. With wins by each, they would meet in the championship tomorrow.
MSU's Mike Keenan (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) and Max Lossen (So., Winona, Minn.) will meet in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at 285 pounds.
The MSU Open concludes Sunday, Nov. 9. Weigh-ins begin at 9 a.m. with competition to follow at 10 a.m.
