Attendance: 14,759. Today's game marked the 85th-consecutive sellout in the Breslin Center. MSU is 75-4 in its last 78 regular season games in the Breslin Center.
Michigan State is now 20-1 all-time in first-round games at the Coca-Cola Classic. The Spartans have won their last seven first-round contests since their lone loss in 1995.
Michigan State now has a 40-3 mark when playing at home in November.
Michigan State is now 3-1 all-time vs. Penn, although the two teams had not met since their Final Four meeting in 1979. The Spartans had previously never played Penn in East Lansing.
Michigan State had seven fewer field goal attempts in the second half than in the first, but made six more. The Spartans hit just 12-of-35 in the first half (34.3), before exploding for an 18-of-28 second half (64.3).
Michigan State won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Penn 41-28, including an 18-8 margin in the second half. MSU has outrebounded all three of its opponents this season, and has outrebounded its last seven opponents dating back to last season.
Junior Kelvin Torbert had his first double-figure scoring game of the season, collecting a team-high 15 points. It was the 27th double-figure scoring game of Torbert's career.
Freshman Shannon Brown had the first double-figure scoring game of his career, and it came on his 18th birthday. Brown scored 12 points, with the last six coming on dunks.
Junior Chris Hill finished with 13 points and sank three three-point baskets. Hill has now made at least one three-point basket in 66 of 69 games during his career.
Sophomore Maurice Ager had a career high seven rebounds, along with eight points and three steals. Ager's previous career high in rebounds was six, set vs. Bucknell Nov. 21.
