Michigan State Wrestling Signs Six In The Early Signing Period

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling has signed six top recruits in the early signing period to National Letters of Intent for the 2004-05 season. Newcomers include Josh Cross (Montrose, Mich./Montrose), John Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill./St. Rita), Eddie Skowneski (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley), Jeff Wimberley (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), Nick Fallico (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and Matt Steintrager (Warren, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central).
"I think this is a stellar group of recruits," said head coach Tom Minkel. "We're excited to have them join the Spartan wrestling program."
Josh Cross
Cross is a two-time Michigan high school state champion for Montrose High School. He has garnered state championships in the past two seasons at 189 and 215 pounds, respectively. He is expected to wrestle at 197 pounds for the Spartans.
John Murphy
Murphy is a two-time all-state wrestler from St. Rita High School in Chicago, Ill. He helped St. Rita to the 2003 Illinois Team State Championship. He was a 2002 Cadet National All-American in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Murphy is expected to wrestle at 174 pounds for MSU.
Eddie Skowneski
Skowneski is a three-time all-state wrestler from Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Twp., Mich. He is a two-time state finalist and 2003 state champion at 145 pounds. He was a 2002 Freestyle Cadet National All-American. Skowneski is expected to wrestle at 149/157 pounds for Michigan State.
Jeff Wimberley
Wimberley is a two-time all-state wrestler from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He went undefeated last season with a 39-0 record and won the Class 2 FHSAA state championship at 103 pounds. He was a Freestyle Junior National All-American in the summer of 2003. Jeff will wrestle at 125 pounds for the Spartans. His brother, Jon, is a current member of the MSU wrestling team at 149 pounds.
Nick Fallico
Fallico is an all-state wrestler from Maine South High School in Chicago, Ill. He has a career record of 115-12 and was a 2002 Cadet National All-American in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Nick is expected to wrestle at 149 pounds for Michigan State.
Matt Steintrager
Steintrager is a 2003 Michigan High School state champion from Detroit Central Catholic High School. He was also a 2003 Junior National finalist in freestyle and is expected to wrestle at 125 pounds for MSU.
