ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team wrapped up its second tournament of the fall Sunday at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan.
Highlighting the final day's matches for the Spartans was the third-place finish in doubles by senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia). Lay and Andrews defeated Gergana Ganeva and Natalie Matko of DePaul, 8-6, to earn the third-place result. After a first-round bye on Friday, the Spartan duo won three of its four doubles matches.
Also in doubles, the Spartan tandem of sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) fell in a consolation match to Gaby Coello and Ashley Jakupcin of Bowling Green, 8-3.
In singles, Andrews reached the consolation finals of the "Maize" singles flight, but was defeated by Jakupcin in a close match, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. In the "Blue" singles flight, Brady won a consolation match against Rattiya Hiranrat of Western Michigan, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
