East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team opens its season Saturday (Nov. 1) at the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti, Mich.
"We're excited to get out of the practice room and get into competition," said head coach Tom Minkel. "The team has worked hard. We're looking forward to seeing where we are and getting off to a good start."
Michigan State ended with a 10-7 overall record in 2002-03 and looks to improve this season. The Spartans finished tied for third in the conference, fourth at the Big Ten Championships and 18th at the NCAA Championships.
The team has been practicing and training with each other throughout the fall, but look forward to opening the season on Saturday.
"The open tournaments will give us kind of a chance to evaluate where we are," said Minkel. "Evaluation in competition is always much more valuable than your evaluation of practice. We're looking forward to getting into competition and getting our weight down. Once we start wrestling, it will allow us to see where we are heading into the season."
Competition at the Eastern Michigan Open runs throughout the day at Bowen Field House where more than 250 wrestlers will compete as the Spartans open a tough 2003-04 season. Michigan State will host the MSU Open Nov. 8-9 in East Lansing, Mich., at Jenison Field House.
