EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) shined through as she won a tough singles match today in the finals of the "A" flight against Melissa Roach from Ball State, 6-2, 6-3. Lay did not drop a set throughout the tournament and surrendered only 15 points in four matches.
"I felt very happy considering we played last weekend also," said Lay. " I felt like I had practiced well and used my time efficiently. When I am on the court I just try to get the job done."
In preparation for her finals match, Lay commented on the importance of concentration. "I am always very quiet before a match and I close my eyes and visualize a perfect match. It really sets me up to perform well."
The "B" singles final saw freshmen Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) against Jill Klauck of Cincinnati. Andrews fell 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
"With the tournaments we've been playing in lately it's been really tiring, so this was another tough weekend. I just came out and tried my best," said Andrews.
In a doubles semifinal match, MSU's team of Andrews and Lay defeated Cincinnati's team of Hannah Hinton and Lyndsey Molony 8-5. In the doubles final match Andrews and Lay went head to head against Toledo's team of Myriam Cueva and Eunice Paravicini and lost 8-5.
"I think our fall season is preparation for the spring," said head coach Tim Bauer. "I'm very proud of the way they've been working. They've improved a lot physically. Ultimately we needed to get a few wins, and we accomplished that this weekend."
Sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) withdrew from their singles matches today due to injuries.
The Spartans will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to compete at the ITA Midwest Regionals starting Thursday, October 23.
