Women's Tennis Continues Play At Spartan Cup

The Michigan State women's tennis team wrapped up day two of The Spartan Cup with two of its five competitors advancing to the finals. Senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) will play tomorrow in singles finals and the doubles semifinals.
Lay advanced to the "A" singles flight finals with a win against Bowling Green's Ashley Jakupcin, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals. In the "B" singles flight, Andrews also advanced to the finals, after defeating Cincinnati's Julie Klauck, 7-6(8-6), 3-6, 7-5, in the quarterfinals, and outplaying Ball State's Susan Kelley, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals.
In the "A" flight consolation quarterfinals, sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) fell to Cincinnati's Lyndsey Molony 6-7(7-2), 7-5, 6-0. In the flight "B" consolation, junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) was successful in both of her matches, beating Toledo's Betsy Hoffman, 6-0, 6-0, and also overpowering Cincinnati's Mariana Lozano, 6-0, 6-0. Also in the "B" consolation bracket, junior Marissa Macholz (East Lansing, Mich.) fell to Claire Smalley of Toledo, 6-3, 6-1.
Doubles matches saw Lay and Andrews defeat the team of Jessica Thompson and Jill Wieman from Ball State, 8-5, to advance to the doubles semifinals. MSU's team of Brady and Gustafson dropped an 8-1 decision in the consolation quarterfinals to Katie Owens and Melissa Roach from Ball State.
The final day of competition at The Spartan Cup will take place tomorrow.
